Hospitality can be a Passport to an Amazing Career
Join Us for a Recruitment Weekend on the 18th and 19th May at The Hilltop Gardens Naxxar, from 09.00 till 13.00hrs!
Since I was little I loved every aspect of the hotel environment. Most of my friends spent their summers on the beach while all I wanted was to be behind the front desk. There is nothing like it.
In the beginning, I was giving out keys, but later I went through nearly all aspects of hospitality before I started managing a hotel. Till today I feel that it was a very important experience for me as without it I would have had a harder time in understanding the demands and challenges in each position. Some don’t need it but for me it was essential. Today it also helps me in relating to people working in operations.
I can also see what ticks people and what makes them jump so to say. This means I can predict what should be their next move in terms of their career.
When I studied at Glion Institute they asked me once where do I see myself in 10 years? I answered I wanted to manage a hotel chain. I didn’t dream at that point that it would be actually our own hotel. Back then it was before AX The Palace and before our properties in Valletta. Today AX Hotels operates 7 hotels and 13 restaurants and it can offer various career paths within each property but also horizontally across entities.
When I look around and see the people I work with on a daily basis, I am really proud of what we have achieved together. With some, I have worked for decades now. The General Manager of Sliema properties – Kevin Callus started as a receptionist. Like me, and with our portfolio growing, so are the opportunities.
Another example is of a supervisor at The Tabloid, Mark Zammit, who later moved on to an F&B Executive and today he is the F&B Service Manager for both hotels. “The best thing about working with this company is that they believe in their own staff and the support is endless, especially when I had both of my children”.
These statements are my constant source of encouragement.
